We were recently contacted about a volunteer opportunity, surveying 5 acres of land near Sherperdsville, KY. If any FOAS members are able to help, please contact Eric Schlarb if you are interested in joining the survey. Read the full details as sent to us via email down below.

Volunteers needed to conduct an archaeological survey of a ca. 5 acre area that will be impacted by the construction of a visitors parking lot at the Active Heroes Retreat near Shepherdsville, Kentucky. The survey will take place Saturday June 25 from 10 AM to 3 PM.

Volunteers from the Lexington area are welcome to meet at the archaeology lab at 1020A Export Street at 8:15 am. Volunteers coming from the Louisville area should meet at the Kroger Parking Lot in Mt Washington at 10:00 AM. Those living in the Frankfort area can meet at the Walmart parking lot 301 Leonardwood Dr, Frankfort, KY 40601 near US 127 in Frankfort at 9:00 am, where transportation will be provided by the National Guard.

The Active Heroes mission is to support U.S. military service members, veterans and their families through physical, educational, and emotional programs providing coping skills in an effort to eliminate suicide. Active Heroes’ vision is to eliminate military/veteran suicide.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Eric Schlarb at ejschl1@uky.edu If you have shovels and shovel probe screens please bring them.

Please bring your own water and lunch.

Next Meeting: July 9th

June 17, 2016

Saturday, July 9, we will have our second annual picnic in Ashland Park on the Clarksville riverfront. We will meet at the shelter house around 2pm, this event will replace our regular meeting. We are asking members to provide either a side or desert, Bob will grill brats and hotdogs.

This is a great opportunity to share items with other members and Anne will have artifacts from a local dig. Last year we had many members of the public stop by to see what we had and to learn about the organization.

We will also be conducting a silent auction as a fundraiser. Fell free to bring something interesting you might have lying around. We are asking that no genuine artifacts be included in the auction. As an organization, we are not permitted to participate in the buying or selling of artifacts.

Please email Christina Pfau if you plan to attend.

Clark County Dig

June 15, 2016

FOAS will be conducting a public archaeology weekend on the 18 and 19 of June at the Clark County Museum. The museum property is located at 721 Michigan Ave in downtown Jeffersonville. We will get started around 10 both days and dig until 2 or 4 depending on the weather. Our supplies are limited, if you are able to bring your own that would be great so we will have more for the public. We hope to see you there!
